Truk Lagoon, Shipwreck Heaven

Truk lagoon, now called Chuk lagoon was Japan's second largest base outside the homeland. On 17 feb 1944 the Americans launched Operation Hailstorm. 450 warplanes straffed and torpedoed the Lagoon sinking over 50 ships and destroying 270 aircraft. Pearl harbour had finally been avenged. Today this is a mecca for wreck divers. I was lucky to dive there on the 50th Anniversary of that fateful day...

Four miles to the west of Porth Hellick Point lay the Wingletang Rock and the wreck site of the 1talia. Stuck down one side of a reef, most of the 1talia now lies well broken up in over 120 feet of water. The very rocky bottom is completely strewn with wreckage, and if you swim over to the other side of’ the reef there is still more of the wreck to be seen lying in very large and deep gullies. ...

Torch was, for propaganda purposes, a landing by U.S. forces, supported by British warships and aircraft, under the belief that this would be more palatable to French public opinion, than an Anglo-American invasion. For the same reason, Churchill suggested that British soldiers might wear U.S. Army uniforms, and No.6 Commando did so.[26] (Fleet Air Arm aircraft did carry US "star" roundels during the operation,[27] and two British destroyers flew the Stars and Stripes.[26]) In reality, the Eastern Task Force-aimed at Algiers-was commanded by Lieutenant-General Kenneth Anderson and consisted of a brigade from the British 78th and the U.S. 34th Infantry Divisions, along with two British commando units (No. 1 and No. 6 Commandos), together with the RAF Regiment providing 5 squadrons of infantry and 5 Light anti-aircraft flights, totalling 20,000 troops. During the landing phase, ground forces were to be commanded by U.S. Major General Charles W. Ryder, Commanding General (CG) of the 34th Division and naval forces were commanded by Royal Navy Vice-Admiral Sir Harold Burrough

The HMS Ganges mast has now been completely renovated and replaced - great to see the return of such an iconic landmark and hats off to Wavensmere for prioritising its restoration. It is a fitting monument to the 160,000 Boys who trained at HMS Ganges and served in the Royal Navy. There is a museum at Shotley Gate dedicated the history of the establishment - details can be found online.

This was an amazing description of the times and effort along with some failings that I never really knew about. I have lived in Plymouth all my life and enjoyed this documentary very much, so thank you. I also completed my apprenticeship in Devonport Naval base and spent the larger part of my life at sea as an engineer in the Merchant Navy, often visiting Plymouth to supply oil to Turnchapel via underground pipes from Coxside, for the S.W. Gas SNG production plants at Oreston. My enjoyment every time I sailed into Plymouth was overwhelming and in those days, the Chief Engineer would give you the port off (two to three days) whilst discharging was underway so as one could go ashore and spend time with their family. I doubt that happens these days. Thank you once again for this wonderful understanding about a structure that Plymothians basically take for granted.

Brackish water found in the Baltic Sea is impossible for some sea organisms to survive in as well as the cold water. Ship worm can't survive at all and therefore won't eat away the ship. For this reason the regular decomposition which would take place in salt water and warmer places didn't happen. Add to the historical irony that the heavy pollution of the water from industries in the late 1800's and early 1900's made it an even worse place for sea organisms but was most fortunate for the Vasa ship. The researcher who found Vasa (and other ships of the era) actually argued that the cold, brackish water would mean the decomposition of the ships being a lot slower than usual and that this meant that if a ship sank intact (not from any explosion of the gun powder for instance) it could be salvaged in very good shape. Vasa simply sunk in the perfect spot. Had she sunk in salt water with strong currents or where ship worm and other organisms thrive she'd be long gone.
